Horse shows: Lachute Spring Fair and others

There were horse shows at home.

The Lachute Spring Fair was the big event every June.

We rode the horses there along the back streets.

There was one year we were not allowed to show because of a new rule about not showing school horses. Pop was not impressed and he took all his horses home.

  1. I remember riding back from the fair one year & we crossed over the dam. That was scarey. I was riding Amberlight who belonged to someone else?
My first show was when we went to St. Eustache.
Suzanne (I remember over hearing someone say "oh no Pops girls are here.)I felt proud.

  2. Amberlight belonged to the McOuats. I rode her too - she was really easy to ride.

I remember a horse show at Ste. Eustache with Nugget who would not load into the trailer to come home. I think my dad was helping out that day and it took forever.

  3. As a 10yr old, I began at Pop's in 1961. Some of his horses that I recall and over the 10 years that I frequented the stables, were: Swankie, Black Prince, King, Barney, Huntsman, Little-Bit-Of-Heaven, Linda, Blondie, and so many more. He had 2 St. Bernards at the time, his older male and then he bought Suzie. I purchased my first horse from Pop, a pure-bred Canadien mare named Shannon which I eventually bred when I went off to Crabbet Equestrian in Sussex, England to certify with a BHSAI (Instructor's Certificate), in 1971. Wal-Ken was my start, and I know where I was when President Kennedy was shot. I was staying with Pop and Mom for the week. I'm glad to have found this little memorial site for Wal-Ken Riding Club. Good bless everyone!
